I’m not a religious person, but I am Jewish culturally. And there are somethings that I think the Jewish culture got right over the thousands of years.
Apples ‘n Honey is one of them.
The tradition is that during Rosh Hashana (the start of the lunar calendar and incidentally the Jewish New Year) you should eat apples dipped in honey. The apple represents the “head” of the new year… the start of a season and a new beginning. The honey represents sweetness. So you are basically calling for a sweet and happy year ahead through the powers of culinary matching.
So go forth and grab a crisp and tart apple from your farmer’s market and dip it in locally made honey. Even if you aren’t celebrating Rosh Hashana, it makes a great snack or dessert.
