The Magic of a Cookie Cutter – making school lunches easier

It’s getting to be the end of summer.

And you know what that means???  School lunches.  YUCK!

You see, my kids don’t love lunch.  During summer, things are easy.  A big breakfast {around brunch time}, a 4pm snack and a late dinner.
But school days… well, they need lunch.  And, they are quite particular when it comes to school lunches (I pack them each a lunch each and every day) and they REQUIRE much more variety than I can handle.

Oh, And they both HATE sandwiches. Which is a huge bummer because sandwiches are a breeze to make at 6:30 in the morning. I LOVE making them sandwiches.

You see the problem?

But, after 3 years of Zoe picking out the meat of a sandwich or complaining that she can’t have peanut butter and jelly because so-and-so is allergic and that means they can’t play together…blah blah blah … I cracked the code towards the end of last year.

Seriously.

With one SIMPLE, EASY {albeit ridiculous} change, Zoe and Sabrina now eat sandwiches.  And they WILL LIKE THEM this year.

Want to know the secret …

A heart shaped cookie cutter.

a heart shaped sandwich changes everything

I kid you not.

Turkey with Cheese…. Zoe wouldn’t eat it.

Turkey with Cheese with a heart cut out (and reinserted) … GONE!

Same with PB&J, Grilled Cheese and Salami.

That little heart cookie cutter has been my life saver this last school year.

And the joke is that I just put the heart shape back into the sandwich … I don’t cut off the crust or discard the non-heart. I leave the whole thing in her lunch and SHE EATS IT!!

The Heart Shaped Cut Outs Make All The Difference

It totally baffles me. I don’t even have to change up the shape. Just a heart works great. I think it’s because I have two very girly girls who love to be loved. When I sent a banana message to Zoe for Valentine’s Day she went crazy, and they both love the post-its I send every so often.

So maybe it’s just a secret code that I love them.

Whatever the reason, I’ve bought a few more cookie cutters this summer in preparation for school, and I’ll be sending more sandwiches in their lunch boxes.

Oh, and the best part… since a sandwich is easy to make, I’ve been teaching them to make their own!

  • Assemble Sandwich
  • Punch Shape
What do you do for you’re kid’s lunches?  Any new tricks for the upcoming school year?
